May 27, 2021

Hello Crittenden Families,

We are almost there- just one more week to go!

Please remember that this Friday is the end of our Trimester grading period, and will be a minimum day. Also, don’t forget that there is no school this Monday, May 31, in honor of Memorial Day.

It has been a long haul of hard work for everyone, but rest, relaxation and rewards are right around the corner. I am so proud of all of you.

Eighth grade families, there are many things happening in this last week for you. I am looking forward to seeing our eighth graders at our upcoming field days and promotion car parade. If you are not able to attend the car parade on Friday, June 4th you will be able to stop by the front office the week of June 7th between 7:30-4pm.

Our PTA would like to invite all 8th grade parents to a contactless drive through to pick up student’s lawn signs. You can drive through the front office loop on Friday, May 28th between 12:30-2pm or 4-5pm.

COVID Vaccinations and free Boba tea at Crittenden on June 2

I’m very excited that Crittenden will host a free COVID vaccination clinic for youth and adults on Wednesday, June 2 from noon to 7:30 p.m. at Crittenden Middle School at the Sports Center, 1500 W. Middlefield Road.

Youth (12 years and older) and adults are welcome.

No appointment needed.

You don't need health insurance.

Everyone is welcome regardless of immigration status.

If any patient received their first vaccination elsewhere, they may receive their second dose at this event.

Children ages 12 - 17 need permission from a parent or guardian to get vaccinated which could be:

* A signed consent form (Forms are linked here COVID vaccination consent forms (English)  - or can be picked up in the Graham and Crittenden school offices)

* A parent or guardian with them

* A telephone call to the parent or guardian

Staff are onsite to support language needs and disability access. For information, call (408) 970-2999 or sccFreeVax.org

Returning students can keep Chromebooks this summer. Non-returning students should bring them back

Thank you for your support of the District’s Chromebook program and distance learning this year. If your student is not returning to a MVWSD school next year, please return your student’s Chromebook to your school office by June 11, 2021 (or sooner). Students who will return to MVWSD schools can keep Chromebooks this summer. Students who are moving on to MVLA and plan to use their Chromebooks in high school are welcome to keep them. We will send specific instructions on how 8th-graders can access the MVLA network on their current Chromebooks.

Chromebooks will not be usable by students who are not enrolled in MVWSD or MVLA next year.

School offices are open weekdays from 7:30 a.m.- 4 p.m. When dropping off, please wear a mask and practice social distancing. For questions, please contact Jon Aker at [email protected].

Executive Functioning Tip of the week:    Executive Function Strategies for Summer

Summer break is a great time to practice and refine executive functioning skills. Here are some strategies to try:

1. Structure: Think of what things help you plan your day and manage responsibilities at home and at the office: lists, spreadsheets, post-it notes, Google docs, calendars, planners…your child thrives off of this sort of structure.

2. Incentives: Your child should be compensated for their hard work, though not financially. Positive attention, praise, and rewards are not only developmentally appropriate, but are also more effective long-term strategies than negative consequences like time-outs and punishments.

3. Flexibility: Expect (and plan for) the unexpected. One of the most important lessons to teach your child is that no matter how many lists, schedules, and color-coded calendars you’re managing, unanticipated changes are inevitable. An effective strategy for building flexibility is to make a game out of it. “How many different plans can we develop? Plan A, Plan B, Plan C…Plan X?” Pitch “flexibility” as a superpower and brainstorm ways that your child’s favorite character can use it. Identify an athlete or celebrity your child admires and list examples of how he/she adapts to unexpected circumstances.

4. Stress Management: Your child’s number one role model for self-regulation and managing executive functions is…drum roll please…YOU! So the more you can model your “flexibility superpowers,” the better. Research suggests that parents’ stress levels are strong predictors of their children’s social-emotional and behavioral functioning. So practice self-care. Try to take short breaks throughout the day. Spend a few minutes outside without electronics or a guided mindfulness exercise before bed.

5. Recharge: Just like the executives at the helm of the world’s most successful companies, your child needs time to rest and recharge. Summer is the perfect time to take a step back from the daily grind and slow down harried lifestyles. Encourage your child to get outside, breathe fresh air, get more sleep and exercise. With fewer assignments, deadlines and commitments, allow your child the permission to sit back and enjoy the ride.

DISTRICT ANNOUNCEMENTS:

MVWSD Summer is here!

Every family's summer plans are different, but our district recommends that all students do some academic practice daily to keep their skills sharp in preparation for next year. MVWSD Summer is a collection of programs to help students maintain their academic skills, keep them connected to learning technology, and access free meals all summer long. These self- and parent-directed programs keep students in a routine during the summer and will go a long way to preventing learning loss. On i-Ready this summer, students will have both personalized lessons that their teachers have chosen for them, and lessons tailored to their needs based on assessment data.

Look for an email soon from MVWSD or click on https://www.mvwsd.org/summer to learn more. Attached are flyers outlining students’ steps for a productive summer and for easy access to all of the programs’ links.
