Hello Crittenden Families,

I want to thank all of our staff, parents, and volunteers who helped with the material distribution yesterday, it was a great success. There was an extra book in this distribution, You Go First, by Erin Entrada Kelly, courtesy of the Crittenden PTA, who continues to do such a great job for our school in this difficult time. If you were not able to pick up the T3 materials. Please stop by the front office M-F between 7:30-4:00pm.

Don’t miss tomorrow’s community check in with our Superintendent Dr. Ayinde Rudolph from 3:30 to 4:30. It’s a great way to keep current on events, particularly when conditions are constantly changing. You can sign up here

If you haven’t yet filled out the LCAP survey, please do so when you can. Your input helps guide our district towards making decisions that best serve our community. Please click here -  http://mvw.sd/ParentLCAP - to give input through February 12 in a survey. We recognize that the wording of some of these questions might seem a little awkward because we are in a pandemic, distance-learning year. Please answer as fully as you can based on the experiences you've had this school year.

We are excited to feature Ms. Wynn Satterwhite (LAHS-principal) & Mr. Michael Jimenez (MVHS-principal) at our Principal Coffee Tuesday, February 9th at 6pm. All grade level parents are welcome to attend. Please register by using the following link; Registration link

Executive Functioning Tip of the week:  Skill: Improving Metacognition

Another way to improve metacognition is by having teens practice recognizing what they don't understand. The act of being confused and identifying one's lack of understanding is an important part of developing self-awareness. Take time at the end of a challenging task to ask, "What was most confusing about the material you explored today?" This not only jumpstarts metacognitive processing, but also creates a culture that acknowledges confusion as an integral part of learning. Providing opportunities to reflect on work is also helpful. Higher-order thinking skills are fostered as teens learn to recognize their own cognitive growth. Questions that help this process might include:

  • Before this assignment, you thought earthquakes were caused by _______. Now you understand them to be the result of _______.
  • How has your thinking about greenhouse gases changed since completing this assignment?

Our Trimester is almost over! This is a good time to sit down with your kids and check for any missing work. Tri 2 ends next week with a minimum day on Friday, February 12th, which also marks the start of our one week Winter Break. Note that each grade has a different minimum day schedule. You can see the minimum day schedule on our website here

These documents are the blueprints that guide all of the District’s work for the benefit of our students.

Black History Month

Even before children can talk, they are learning about the world and about race through the words and actions of others. Parents, teachers, and caregivers have the unique opportunity to frame their child's first attempts to understand and talk about race. Talking about race matters because (1) everyone has a racialized identity, (2) racialized identity significantly impacts a person's life, and (3) race is a defining social construct in America.

This Black History Month, use the Better Together infographic to begin racially-focused conversations with children acknowledging that conversations about race will look different for each family and classroom and there is no single way to talk to children about race. Have honest conversations with your students about the history of privilege and oppression as it relates to Black History and, where appropriate, connect this to local community and larger global issues.

Together, we can explore Black History. Together, we can become anti-racist.
