One of my two-year-old’s favorite bedtime stories is called Goodnight iPad.
That’s right, it’s a parody of the venerable children’s classic, Goodnight Moon. Not to spoil it or anything, but the story is similar to the classic, except that in Goodnight iPad, grandma rabbit says ‘goodbye’ to iPhones, iPads, Androids, video games, etc. by snatching them out of the hands of her children and grandchildren and throwing them out of the window. It’s cute.
Although Goodnight iPad is supposed to be tongue-in-cheek, it also has a serious message: in our connected age (and especially in the area where we live) often it’s important to disconnect from the virtual world so that we can reconnect with the real world. It is in this spirit that our district has recently made a commitment to pilot an 8th grade Yosemite trip that will expand students’ horizons, help them understand better the beauty and intricacies of nature, and connect with each other as collaborative learners in one of the most gorgeous places on the planet. This is a fantastic learning opportunity and I urge all 8th grade families to join us tonight in the MUR to learn more. Please see below for details.
Eighth Grade Yosemite Trip
The District is delighted to sponsor an outdoor education trip to Yosemite National Park during Spring Break: April 6-10, 2015. A group of 8th-grade students from Crittenden and Graham will have the opportunity to spend time in one of the most iconic places in the world. Run by NatureBridge, a renowned environmental education organization, the trip promises to be fun and educational, blending adventure with learning. To participate in this Yosemite pilot trip, students need to complete an application (download forms at tinyurl.com/mvwsd-yosemite). The District and its partners, including MVEF and NatureBridge, are working to secure the resources to offer this program to all of its 8th-grade students beginning in the 2015-2016 school year.
Come to a Yosemite Info Night to learn more about the program. A NatureBridge representative will be at hand to answer questions. Spanish translation will be provided. - TONIGHT, Thu, Oct. 16, 7-8pm @ Crittenden MUR
Earthquake Drill: Week of October 20
The District will be conducting its annual earthquake exercise the week of October 20. This is an opportunity for staff and students to test our emergency response actions and make improvements in those actions. If you are driving by the school that week and see students and teachers on the field (not dressed in PE uniforms), it may be because of the drill.
Call for Substitute Teachers
Our district will be hosting an informational meeting for community members who are interested in becoming MVWSD substitute teachers. The meeting will take place in the District Office board room on Wednesday, October 22 at 4:30 p.m. We are always looking for great people to step in when teachers get sick or when they are attending professional learning sessions. Come to the info session to find out more!
Thank You to All Book Lovers!
Thank you to everyone who showed your support of our library by attending the book fair last week. Your purchases will help us buy new books throughout the year. Thank you to the PTA parents and the leadership students who volunteered and helped make the book fair a success. Special thanks to the students who wore the Clifford the Big Red Dog suit in hot weather. You are all greatly appreciated!
Sign up for the PowerSchool Parent Portal
Thank you to the parents and families who have already set up their PowerSchool Parent Portals. The Parent Portal gives you additional options that the student accounts do not. For example, it gives you the option to get regular emails updating you on your children’s assignments and grades. According to our records, it seems that many parents have not yet set up accounts. If you need assistance or no longer have the information that was sent home with your child two weeks ago, please call the office.
Rainy Day Activity Room
The rain is coming (we really, really hope)! Leadership would like to set up a rainy day activity room full of games like ping pong, foosball and the sort. If you know anyone who would like to get rid of a game table and is willing to donate it to a worthy cause, please contact Ms. Mogin at firstname.lastname@example.org. Thank you!
Crittenden 2014-15 eScrip Drive is here
Have you ever heard of eScrip? If you haven't, the word basically means EASY MONEY for our school!
This is how it works:
- Your family members register any one or all of their existing grocery loyalty, debit and credit cards for use in the program. Like a Safeway club card!
- Participating merchants will make financial contributions to their chosen group, like Crittenden, based on purchases made by them, just by using the cards they have registered.
- The purchases are tracked and available online at www.eScrip.com, allowing your family to see just how much they are earning for Crittenden!
There's no selling any products and NO COST TO YOU OR YOUR FAMILY. It's free and easy. See your first period teacher for the eScrip form and take this home to your family today to start earning thousands of dollars for Crittenden Middle School. The money will be used to fund our dances, student activities, classroom supplies as well as music and art materials. You and your family CAN make a difference in our school. Encourage your family, friends and neighbors to visit eScrip.com and add Crittenden to their membership TODAY!
