I overheard the following at a student-led conference last year: “I think I could do better by being precise in my writing -- like, show the reader what I’m talking about using more descriptive vocabulary, rather than just telling them. Mom, will you read my [next assignment] before I turn it in and give me feedback on it?”
As you might imagine, I was smiling from ear to ear. This interaction between a student and her parent is exactly the point of our annual student-led conferences. Instead of traditional parent-teacher conferences where (let’s face it) adults often talk at each other, Crittenden’s student-led conferences make students the star of the show, giving them ownership of their learning process and letting them practice all-important speaking and presentation skills. Teachers will, of course, still be present: they will float from family to family, popping in on the student’s conference to answer questions and to provide feedback.
Logistically, I will admit that the process can sometimes feel like speed dating, and every family may not interact with every one of their child’s teachers, but the impact of students leading their own conferences is well-worth the inconvenience. Besides, families can always email or call their children’s teachers to discuss progress or to set up a meeting. I look forward to seeing all families next week.

Student-led Conferences next week: October 6-9
Please note that next week we are on a minimum day schedule every day - school starts at 7:55 and ends at 12:20 every day, even Wednesday. There is no late start next Wednesday.
This week, we passed out conference appointment confirmation slips in homerooms. Parents, please ask your children for these slips, and bring them (and your student) with you to your appointment. As mentioned in the Principal’s Message, students will lead their own conferences and teachers will drop in to the conversation. Each conference appointment is 25 minutes long. Families, please do your best next week to adhere to the time limit. Thank you!
Book Fair during conference week
There's always something for everyone at the book fair! Please stop by room 208 every afternoon next week and shop for exciting new books, unique pencils, unusual erasers, special bookmarks, decorative posters and more. All purchases benefit our library, so bring your family and go on a shopping spree next week!
Sign up for the PowerSchool Parent Portal
Thank you to the parents and families who have already set up their PowerSchool Parent Portals. The Parent Portal gives you additional options that the student accounts do not. For example, it gives you the option to get regular emails updating you on your children’s assignments and grades. According to our records, it seems that many parents have not yet set up accounts. If you need assistance or no longer have the information that was sent home with your child two weeks ago, please call the office.
Rainy Day Activity Room
The rain is coming (we really, really hope)! Leadership would like to set up a rainy day activity room full of games like ping pong, foosball and the sort. If you know anyone who would like to get rid of a game table and is willing to donate it to a worthy cause, please contact Ms. Mogin at email@example.com. Thank you!
Crittenden 2014-15 eScrip Drive is here
Have you ever heard of eScrip? If you haven't, the word basically means EASY MONEY for our school!
This is how it works:
- Your family members register any one or all of their existing grocery loyalty, debit and credit cards for use in the program. Like a Safeway club card!
- Participating merchants will make financial contributions to their chosen group, like Crittenden, based on purchases made by them, just by using the cards they have registered.
- The purchases are tracked and available online at www.eScrip.com, allowing your family to see just how much they are earning for Crittenden!
- There's no selling any products and NO COST TO YOU OR YOUR FAMILY. It's free and easy. See your first period teacher for the eScrip form and take this home to your family today to start earning thousands of dollars for Crittenden Middle School. The money will be used to fund our dances, student activities, classroom supplies as well as music and art materials. You and your family CAN make a difference in our school. Encourage your family, friends and neighbors to visit eScrip.com and add Crittenden to their membership TODAY!
