It’s almost that time again - after a year’s hiatus, standardized testing is back in California. As I mentioned in earlier blog posts, Crittenden students will be taking the tests the weeks of April 28 and May 4, with makeups the week of May 11. All students will be taking the ELA and Math tests and 8th graders will be taking an additional Science test. Families, please do not plan out of town trips during this time period!
The new Smarter Balanced assessments measure student knowledge of California's ELA and Mathematics standards. These new assessments replace the former multiple choice assessments for students in grades 3-5 and grade 11.
Smarter Balanced tests provide one measure of student knowledge of the subject matter, critical thinking, analytical writing, and problem solving skills they need to prepare for and succeed in today’s world.
These assessments provide important information as to whether students are on track to master the new standards. The tests provide timely and actionable student information so that teachers and schools can adjust and improve teaching to ensure students have the knowledge and skills they need to succeed in school and beyond.
Tests are only one measure of the learning of each child--at Crittenden, our mission is to inspire and empower every student to pursue academic and personal excellence, which means that we also value excellence in the social-emotional and extracurricular realms. It is also important, however, to see how our students are doing with the new Common Core Standards. Our goal is to strike a meaningful balance between these two ideas. Life is, after all, about maintaining a healthy equilibrium.
I welcome your thoughts and questions.

Our next annual tradition is coming up one week! See the flyer for more details.
- The Community Dinner will once again be spearheaded by Lisa Ramirez and be Italian themed (mmm, pasta). If you can help by donating food drinks, or your time, please contact Lisa at firstname.lastname@example.org or 650-468-3494.
- The annual student Talent Show will take place from 6:00 to 7:00 and will feature over a dozen talented performers who auditioned and were selected last week. This is a hugely popular event and is not to be missed.
- Finally, our spring Open House will go from 7:05 to 8:00. Teachers’ classrooms will be open and will be proudly displaying your children’s work. This is a great chance to say hello, mingle, and ask questions of any of your child’s teachers.
