Dear Reader, the PM is taking a break to recharge. Substituting this week is one of my favorite educational speakers of all time, Sir Ken Robinson. I hope you enjoy his inspirational and hilarious TED talk: “How to Escape Education’s Death Valley.”
8th Grade Spring Break Yosemite Trip
Thank you to the families who came to our information night last week to hear about the amazing district-sponsored opportunity to go Yosemite over Spring Break. If you missed it, check out the organizers’ website here, where you can download an application. All applications are due to the office by Thursday, November 6. The selection process is need-blind, and no student who is accepted will be left behind due to financial difficulties!
Potential Washington, D.C. Trip
Although it is not a school-sponsored trip, we’ve always had members of our school community to take the lead on planning this annual event on a volunteer basis. If you are interested being trip leader, please contact Mr. Chang for more information.

Call for Substitute Teachers
Our district will be hosting an informational meeting for community members who are interested in becoming MVWSD substitute teachers. The meeting will take place in the District Office board room on Wednesday, October 22 at 4:30 p.m. We are always looking for great people to step in when teachers get sick or when they are attending professional learning sessions. Come to the info session to find out more!
Sign up for the PowerSchool Parent Portal
Thank you to the parents and families who have already set up their PowerSchool Parent Portals. The Parent Portal gives you additional options that the student accounts do not. For example, it gives you the option to get regular emails updating you on your children’s assignments and grades. According to our records, it seems that many parents have not yet set up accounts. If you need assistance or no longer have the information that was sent home with your child two weeks ago, please call the office.
Common Core in MVWSD
The 2014-15 school year marks the first year of full implementation of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) in California. In an effort to keep parents and community updated about happenings both in our District and in the state, Educational Services will be providing short bi-monthly updates in school newsletters. The updates will provide information and answer questions about the CCSS. Additionally, the District will be conducting a series of parent education opportunities throughout the school year to support families in understanding the CCSS. We held our first parent training on the CCSS on September 30th. The next session will be in November and will focus on the Smarter Balanced assessments. All sessions will be offered in English and Spanish. More information will be sent regarding the time and location of the sessions.
